Valerie May-Stewart PhD RPsych
REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST
Valerie works with individuals, couples and families, focusing on a broad spectrum of issues including the challenges of balancing work and family, relationship conflict, substance abuse, and women's and men's issues. Working predominantly within a narrative framework, her collaborative approach uses specific questioning techniques to open up new possibilities. Rather than focusing on what causes the problem, the narrative therapy approach examines the restraints that prevent individuals from discovering alternative solutions. She then helps her clients implement these new findings.
Her past experiences working with young offenders, and in implementing an alcohol and drug program in a minimum-security correctional facility, has contributed to the depth of her work. As a registered psychologist, and a leader in the field of psychology, she has presented research findings at international conferences and has been actively involved in the local community providing workshops to teachers, students, and the community at large. She has also taught counselling courses at local colleges, San Diego State University, and at the University of British Columbia.
